Societal factors that affect a child’s ability to cope in school (e.g. family pressures, inability to sleep, trauma, behavioural needs) lead to an increase in mental health difficulties. Disengagement within school due to inability to cope and mental health difficulties are strong indicators for those at risk of being involved in youth violence. 100% of children involved in county lines had been excluded from school (2019 NCA). Every day 35 children are permanently excluded, 1% of those will achieve 5 GCSEs. Exclusions have increased by 71% since 2013 and the most common reason is ‘persistent disruptive behaviour’. Of 85,975 people in prison, 54,164 were excluded from school. Upon release, just 16% of prison leavers are employed within 12 months.
MPWR will ensure no child or young person is left to follow the path above and become a statistic – exclusion, ignorance, disengagement and lack of understanding, patience and opportunity ends with MPWR.
